Read that last line with care:
A bicyclist is dead after being killed by a suspected drunk driver.
The accident happened just before 9 PM Friday night on East Old Spanish Trail.
The Pima County Sheriff's department says the driver of a pick up truck veered onto the shoulder, hitting the cyclist, 45-year-old Paul L'ecuyer from behind.
L'ecuyer hit the windshield and landed in the bed of the truck.
Deputies say Melissa Marie Arrington drove about a quarter of a mile before stopping.
She's being held at the Pima County Jail on a murder charge.
Deputies say alcohol may have been a factor in last night's accident.
Bikers out on that stretch of road say they take safety very seriously.
As traffic clips down the two lane road, the cars and trucks share it with bicycle riders.
"You try to get as far over to the right side of the road," says biker Ken Todd.
They ride on the shoulder only a few feet wide. A white line is sometimes the division between life and death.
"It can happen in daylight. I know a biker that got hit by a drunk at 7 AM," Todd says.
Bikers say they are always mindful of traffic.
"It's a nice route, it's got a nice bike lane, but you still have to look out for traffic, particularly heavy truck traffic, Todd says.
But no matter how careful, accidents can still happen.
"Especially in a cycling friendly town like this, when there's so few accidents it stinks to hear about one," rider Alex Waters says.
The sheriff's department says the bike rider killed in the accident did everything right.
Deputy Dawn Barkman says, "I was told he was appropriately riding his bike in the proper manner on the shoulder of the roadway."
"You gotta remember the pecking order-- bikers are a little lower than cars so you have to give them respect," Todd says.
